IN DARKEST AFRICA (H M STANLEY). VERY RARE 2 VOLUME SET
An extremely rare two volume set, H M Stanley's In
Darkest Africa was published in 1890. In Darkest Africa recounts
Henry M Stanley's last expedition to Africa, the aim of which was
to rescue Emin Pasha (Viceroy), who had been appointed a governor
in the southern Sudan by the British. In Darkest Africa is an extremely
important book for all those interested in the history of Africa,
both for its descriptions of indigenous peoples and terrain and for
what it reveals about the imperialist attitudes that shaped the course
of events.
First edition of In Darkest Africa - published in London by Sampson
Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington. Front endpaper of both volumes
has a previous, probably original, owner's signature - it reads 'A
J Craig, Paisley'

This book is wonderfully illustrated with portrait frontispieces
to each volume (that of volume two being a fine photograph of Stanley and
with a facsimile of the author's signature), 36 full page illustrations,
over 100 other woodcut illustrations in text, 2 very large colour folding
maps at fronts (both slightly torn), 1 folding map in text, 1 diagram printed
in colour. Publisher's original dark red cloth gilt-lettered and with elaborate
pictorial decoration in gilt and black on the spines and covers, endpapers
designed as maps and printed in green. A handsome set, with very little
wear to the cover and quite well preserved and in good order internally.
