Glass safety film (safety window film) - information for businesses
How safe is your glass? Existing glass is your premises or home may not have been made to existing building regulations - i.e. it may not be safety glass. Anyone running a business needs to be aware of regulations governing glazing safety. This applies to all kinds of businesses from shops to childminders' homes.
To comply with Health & Safety Executive recommendations, glass in certain locations must be made impact safe - HSE information about glass safety. Glass in these areas must protect against injury from broken glass. Safety window film (glass safety film) is a cost-effective way of upgrading existing glazing to HSE requirements.
Glass safety film - more information
Ordinary glass is dangerous, particularly at low level, as it breaks into larger jagged pieces, which could cause serious injury. Building Regulations require safety glass to be fitted in glazed doors, side panels and areas below 800mm in height (approx 2ft 7 in) in new homes.
Safety glass is specially made to break safely, i.e. glass which breaks in a way that does not result in large sharp pieces, reducing the risk of injury.
Laminated and toughened glass are the two main types of safety glass. If you cannot afford to replace the glass then a purpose made glass safety film will retain broken parts in one piece. Dont forget that safety glass should also be fitted in furniture such as cupboards, dressers, tabletops etc., or add glass safety film to such glass.
Hampshire County Council has fairly concise information about replacement glass and glazing
